The Last Ship begins when a virus decimates the planet's population, wiping out over 80% of the world's inhabitants. However, due to its position at the time of the pandemic, the U.S. warship USS Nathan James, led by Captain Thomas "Tom" Chandler, manages to avoid contracting the disease.
